Auburn Seminary President the Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson responds to the mass shooting in Orlando

NEW YORK — Now is the time for all religious leaders to unite in support of the LGBTQI community. “When one suffers, we all suffer together.” We at Auburn Seminary join with the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives in Orlando to gun violence. The grief, anger, and bewilderment that comes in the aftermath of such senseless violence is breaking our hearts. We hold especially close today the members of the LGBTQI community who feel this loss keenly because their cause for full inclusion is our cause. And we believe this is close to the heart of God as well, for we are all made in God’s image and precious in God’s sight.

We want to lift up the ways we are seeing a community of love and care manifest in Orlando — in the words and actions of local and federal authorities who speak about how they are collaborating to find answers and how they need each other. We see community strength and resilience in the people who chose to stand in long lines to donate the blood that is already pulsing through the veins of the survivors.

At Auburn, we pledge ourselves to redouble our efforts to work with leaders of faith and moral courage across the country to replace hatred and fear with understanding, respect and love. The multifaith movement for justice stands united against the gun violence plaguing our nation and the Islamophobia that attempts to divide us. We must not let this moment be the occasion for some to exploit our differences. Let us instead build a world where we can rejoice together because all are welcome, and “none shall make them afraid.”
