Auburn’s Media Training equips leaders of faith and moral courage with the skills to find and amplify your voice across traditional and digital channels, from social media to national TV.

Auburn media trainings help leaders of faith and moral courage learn the skills necessary to successfully show up in the media both online and in traditional media.

With a diverse team of trainers located throughout the United States with varied religious, cultural and issue competencies, we are prepared to meet the needs of organizations, funders, and individuals seeking to shape the public conversation through the media.

Auburn’s media training program has shaped the field of faith-rooted justice work over the last ten years, training thousands of leaders and working with hundreds of organizations in the multifaith movements for justice.

FEES

The fee for a full-day media, storytelling, social media, or digital organizing training for up to 20 people is $3,250 (includes travel/lodging).

Our trainings can also be offered as half-day trainings, larger trainings for bigger groups, 2-3 day intensives that cover multiple topics, and conference presentations. We love to work one-on-one, too, as coaches and consultants on prophetic communications for leaders of faith and moral courage.

TRAINERS

Macky Alston

Macky Alston is Vice President for Strategy, Engagement and Media at Auburn Theological Seminary, where he works to equip faith leaders to stand for justice through the media. Alston founded Auburn Media in 2002 and served for ten years as its director, innovating a range of programs related to media and religion and training over 3,500 faith leaders — among them many of the most influential religious leaders of our day — on a wide range of justice issues. Alston is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose films include “Love Free or Die,” premiered Sundance, broadcast PBS October 29, 2012; “Hard Road Home,” PBS 2008; “The Killer Within,” Discovery Films 2006; “Questioning Faith,” HBO 2002; and “Family Name,” PBS 1998. He has won awards at Sundance twice, received the Gotham Open Palm Award and earned three Emmy nominations. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary, he comes from a long line of ministers in the American South and grew up exposed to the power of religion, politics and the media, as charismatic leaders on the Left and Right shaped society and history for generations to come.

Kellie Anderson-Picallo is a minister and media professional. She is an ordained Presbyterian PC(USA) minister and a former PBS and Discovery Channel producer who has received awards including a Time Magazine Award, an Emmy Award and 2 Telly’s before turning to a Call to ministry. A frequent preacher and teacher, she knows the power of the media to create social change. The co-creator of the weekly social media platform 90-Second Sermon, she consults, produces and project manages for churches and organizations. Kellie is the Director of Mission Strategy for First Presbyterian Church of Englewood in New Jersey, a growing multicultural congregation and she received her M.Div at Union Theological Seminary.

Rev. Jennifer Crumpton is a media commentator, columnist, public speaker and the author of Femmevangelical: The Modern Girl’s Guide to the Good News. After more than a decade as an advertising executive for Fortune 500 brands, she left the corporate world to earn a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. The organizer of Faith Not Fear ’16, a campaign of multi-religious leaders speaking out against dangerous presidential election rhetoric, Jennifer lives in New York City and works for interfaith and gender justice around the country. Rev. Ashley Harness is ordained in the United Church of Christ as is also a communications strategist with almost a decade of experience in non-profit media work. When she is not enjoying leading worship, standing for justice or listening deeply in pastoral care at Lyndale United Church of Christ, she is consults with the Center for Progressive Renewal to help progressive churches across the country grow. She also consults through Auburn Theological Seminary’s digital organizing and media teams, providing confidential training and counsel to religious leaders seeking to use social and traditional media as a pulpit. You can follow her writing on the Huffington Post. Ashley received her Masters of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in 2012 and her Bachelor of Arts at Brown University in 2005.

Isaac Luria

Isaac Luria is a leader in the multifaith movement for justice, a pioneer in prophetic communications for social change, and the strategy guru behind Auburn’s Groundswell digital platform. He’s a trusted strategist and trainer in modern organizing with digital tools, faith-rooted story-telling for social change, and prophetic communications. Before Auburn, Isaac was the VP of New Media and Communications at J Street. He is currently a Media Fellow at the New World Foundation. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Rabbi Sara Luria, and their three children.

Lida Masoudpour is a political and nonprofit veteran with over 10 years of experience working at start-up organizations and on campaigns. Currently a consultant, Lida has advised firms with specialties ranging from communications strategy to development/organization structure to management consulting. Previously, Lida held positions at FitzGibbon Media, a public relations firm for which she established and led the campaigns division, including a campaign on child sex trafficking; at the Democracy Alliance and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics where she helped both groups grow, achieve scale, and transition out of their start-up phase; and twice at Media Matters for America, first as one of the initial members of its start-time team, and later as the Deputy Director of a new and innovative messaging operation. In addition to her nonprofit work, Lida has held positions in then-Senator Hillary Clinton’s Congressional office and on her 2008 presidential campaign.

Hussein Rashid, PhD, is founder of islamicate, L3C, a consultancy focusing on religious literacy and cultural competency. He is a contingent faculty member and worked at several New York-area universities. His research focuses on Muslims and American popular culture. He is a fellow with The Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship, the American Muslim Civic Leadership Institute, and the Truman National Security Project. He was a fellow at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, and a term member on the Council of Foreign Relations. He is on the advisory boards of The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, Deily, Sacred Matters, Anikaya Dance Theater, the Tanenbaum Center, Intersections International, and Al-Rawiya. He served on the advisory board of Project Interfaith, Everplans, and the British Council’s Our Shared Future Program. He is currently working with the Children’s Museum of Manhattan as a content expert.

Susan Reed is a nationally recognized media consultant, focusing on media strategy and training, strategic planning and positioning, as well as editing and writing. From 2011 to 2013, Reed was Director of Strategy & Innovation at Auburn Seminary’s Auburn Media, which provides media training, strategy and consulting services to the world of progressive religion and social change-oriented nonprofits. Reed’s career has included positions as Editor-in-Chief of O, The Oprah Magazine, Editor-in-Chief of Conde Nast’s Golf for Women Magazine, Senior Literary Agent at IMG; Reed has also held senior editorial positions at Conde Nast’s Women’s Sports & Fitnesss, People Magazine, and Saturday Review. Reed has consulted for Simon & Schuster on new media strategy and marketing, and has been a consultant for the Ford Foundation’s Religion in the Public Square program. Reed serves on the Board of Directors of New York Theological Seminary and The Francis Asbury Palmer Fund. She is a former Director of Friendfactor, a social media-based LGBT advocacy organization. She is a graduate of Vassar College and The Sidwell Friends School.

Erica Williams Simon is a social impact strategist, millennial expert and media personality. She is the CEO of EWS Strategies, LLC a social impact consulting firm, and the creator of “Impact Academy” an education and training program for next generation change-makers. Previously, Erica served as Senior Strategist at Citizen Engagement Lab (CEL). Listed by Politico.com as one of 50 Top Politicos, she was also the co-founder of Progress 2050, a first of its kind project at the Center for American Progress that develops policy and engagement models for an increasingly diverse America. Erica is an NAACP 40 under 40 leader, a Case Foundation Social Citizen Ambassador and O Magazine Women’s Rule Leadership Award Winner. She has appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Charlie Rose, MTV, BET, CNN and a host of other programs with her work/writing being featured in Harvard Business Review, Washington Post and CNN.com. She is a proud preacher’s daughter and Washington area native where she lives with her high-school sweetheart husband.
