Statement of Auburn Seminary President the Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson
NEW YORK — Today, President Trump will deliver the State of the Union address and Stacey Abrams will issue the Democratic response. Auburn President the Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson issued the following statement in advance of the speeches:
“We don’t need to wait for tonight’s address by the president to know that our country is on the wrong path. Our union is fractured and fraying under the duress of sustained attacks by our government on our most basic human rights.
“We expect to hear President Trump continue his call to build a wall at the southern border. We also anticipate that he will use his speech to build even higher rhetorical and divisive walls as he promises to escalate his attacks on human and civil rights. As a faith leader, I call on the president to lead with compassion and moral courage.
“Now more than ever, the multifaith movement for justice must hold accountable those who speak with bias, divide with hate and rule with fear — including the president. At this critical moment, we must stop U.S. policies that attack mythical ‘others’ and tear apart families and communities; instead, we should work for social change to heal and repair the world.
“I encourage all faith leaders to join me in working to ensure that our faith traditions are a source of inspiration for courageous social action. It’s time to speak in the public square about the ways our faith can unite us, instead of focusing on the fear that divides us.”
Henderson is available to comment before and following the State of the Union. Please contact Loretta Kane (917-410-7242 or [email protected]) to schedule an interview.
