James Howard Hill Jr., Ph.D.

James Howard Hill Jr., Ph.D., is an educator, author, photographer, and theorist whose work bridges cultural criticism, political theory, and the Black study of religion. His scholarship examines how life exceeds and haunts the limits of modern religious categories, drawing on archives such as music, film, social movements, and lived experience. He is the author of The Michael Jackson Cacophony and The Haunted Fantastic: On Faith, Vocation, and Critical Hope. He serves as Assistant Professor of Religion at Boston University, where his teaching, mentorship, and writing cultivate critical and imaginative approaches to religion, study, and lived experience.
